Windows XP SP2 cripples number of SYN connections -- a discussion
Are TCP/IP connections failing on your Windows XP SP2 computer?
Check your event logs: look for Event ID 4226...
If you see it, you may be suffering from the effects of the "security fix" that limits the number of SYN connections to 10/sec in Windows XP SP2. Unfortunately, if you are a P2P user, this will heavily impact you...
here's a link to a discussion on how to fix this:

Note for suse 10.1 "factory" users: if you upgrade dbus-1 and then can't login to kdm or gdm...
yesterday, I used SMART package manager to upgrade my main SuSE 10.1 development box, where I do my Ruby work. My original intention was to upgrade compiz, since the version I was using was implicated in an annoying Firefox bug when using compiz, where the Firefox menus would disappear periodically. (there is a Novell bugzilla entry about it, but you have to be registered on Novell.com to view it, here) Based on that post, it seemed that SuSE "Factory" release would have the compiz version that was reported by the developers to fix the problem. Since I am using SMART, I added the SuSE factory channel to my SMART package manager. Then I decided it would be a good idea to upgrade a bunch more of my packages to "Factory"...including dbus-1. The latest dbus-1 package was '0.62.5' and my previous package was '0.60-30'. Once I rebooted, I was unable to login via kdm or gdm to kde or gnome(although I was able to login to failsafe-gnome. a quote from einstein to ponder....
"A human being is a part of a whole, called by us _universe_, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest... a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty."
